I have installed a D-Link USB board in a 6500 in order to connect an
HP 1200SE laser printer. System is 8.6. Apple USB extensions are
1.4.1. HP driver is their HP LaserJet 1200 USB 1.3 with HP LaserJet
1200 PPD 1.0.

Built in RAM is 96K. and Virtual memory is on (192M total).

This is for a small Historical Society with virtually no technology
budget, so going from an Epson P-O-S inkjet to the laser printer is a
big leap.

There are numerous small and annoying quirks with this printer but
here are the two major headaches:

1. If a job (say, a web page) is sent to the printer while the Mac is
connected via its external 56K modem to the web, the whole shebang
apparently freezes. Mouse movement is possible but there is no
response from any apps which are running. It may be that waiting 5
minutes or so would find the system again responsive but nobody waits
that long.

2. Sometimes, for reasons which are obscure, it seems the printer
doesn't "wake up" when a job is sent - no "processing data" light
blinking - and again the system hangs. Forcing a restart causes the
print job to print and the printer, having been whacked upside its
pointy haid, acts normal until the next time...

and 3 - mysterious to me - if the computer is not shut off overnight,
when I come back in, the System has bloated itself to about 190M (all
RAM plus VM) and nothing can be run until it's restarted.

I've never seen this behavior on this computer before installing the
HP software. I have a virtually identical setup (a Performa 6360)
elsewhere which was used to test the D-Link USB board and printer
before taking it all over to the Historical Society. I did not see
any of these problems.
