Here are a couple of things to check:

Does the monitor control panel show more than 1 available setting? Is their
a choice for "All" or only for "Recommended" under Resolutions?

Does the video adapter have switches?  If so, you will probably need to find
the proper setting for the desired resolution. ( shut off the computer while
moving the switches.) If not and you only have one choice under the
"Recommended" Resolutions, the adapter is only allowing the default
resolution.
