I've had a problem with my Sonnet G3/450/1M and external SCSI drives. I've been in the habit of using two 4GB external SCSI drives, one of which contains my OS 8.6 boot volume. I've used them with various machines, with and without internal drives (SCSI or ATA), without this problem. But when I tried using them with my new Sonnet G3 card in a PTP, the machine would freeze just after the desktop photo came on but before any drive icons appeared on the desktop.
The problem did not occur with the second external drive turned off! It also didn't occur with extensions off. It was NOT affected either way by whether I had a drive connected to my Sonnet Turbo ATA 66 or not. After much fooling around, and doing a conflict test with Conflict Catcher 8, I discovered that the problem went away when I disabled the Sonnet Processor Upgrade extension. (I tried version 2.0 and two earlier versions of the extension, and the problem was the same with all of them.) Unfortunately, without the Sonnet Processor Upgrade extension I have no L2 Cache, at least if ASP and Metronome are to be believed. This may cease to be a practical problem for me when I finish setting up my new 80 GB ATA drive, but I'm still curious about it. BTW, I haven't tried connecting hard drives to my internal SCSI cable, since I'd have to take them out of their cases. -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
