The key thing, and thanks for fessing up to it, is that OS 8.6 was 
installed from an iMac restore CD.   The problem is that the restore 
CD installs an OS for the iMac only, and does not include extra 
extensions necessary for other Mac's to use hardware that is not 
common with the newer computer, such as Ethernet.   Someone with a 
5400 will need to look at their ethernet extensions and e-mail them 
to you.
