Hi. The other day my 7500/g3/250 running OS 8.6 refused to startup beyond the loading of a few extensions. I traced the problem down to the Apple cd/dvd extension, and once disabled the machine started up just fine. I tried replacing the extension but it locked up again. So now it seems the CD-ROM drive is suspect and for some reason is causing the lockup when its extension is loading. This was confirmed when it would no longer boot an install CD. The termination is set on the end HDD and everything has a unique ID. I connected one of the HDDs to where the CD was connected and it worked fine, so the cable isn't the problem.
Is this CD-ROM drive shot? I opened it up and it "looks" fine for what that's worth. Funny thing is that the drive is still recognized by Apple System Profiler.
