I'm not sure that this is your problem, but I recently solved an intermittant launching freeze problem on my 7600/OS 8.6--it turned out to be a corrupted font.
You can drag the Fonts folder out of the System folder, then try launching the app. If it seems to work after that, one of your fonts is buggy.
