I'd have to agree.

There's not enough volume in that housing for a 510 watt supply ... at least
not without making it inherently unreliable.

It's a rather complicated supply ... not like those PeeCee models which claim
to put 390 watts in about one third the volume of the 8600/9600 supply.

That being said, I have found a 325 watt PeeCee power supply which will fit
in a Beige G3, and, by extension (and with the Beige's PSU adapter plate) in
an 8600/9600.

The trick on this adaptation is to get a late model ATX supply ... the ones
with the 4-pin (2 by 2) Japan Molex connector and the (brand unknown) "1 by"
connector which appears as though it came from a PC/XT supply.

Cut off those two connectors. Then, go into the supply and cut wires from
those two connectors all except one +5 line, two ground lines and one +12
line. Shrink-on some insulating tubing over the cut ends.

Make these four remaining wires into an additional disk drive connector using
a crimp-on AMP Mate-N-Lock connector.

Finally, convert the two 3.5" floppy power connectors into AMP Mate-N-Lock
connectors. I don't have the faintest idea why the manufacturers always wire
+12 and the +12 return to those 3.5" floppy connectors as every one I've
endountered has been +5 volts only.

The result of all this is a high-capacity PSU which can supply eight drives,
or seven drives and the fans in the handle of the Beige MT.
