DVD is a read only drive, which will read commercial data or media DVD's.

DVD-RAM records to a similar disk format to DVD, but the disks are not 
readable in DVD drives, only other DVD-RAM drives. This was the very 
first recordable DVD format, and used mainly for backups and suchlike. 
Apple shipped these in some systems.

DVD-RW and DVD+RW are competing (and incompatible) standards for DVDRW 
disks that can be read in plain DVD drives.

DVD-RW is the standard supported by Apple's Superdrives. Several 
companies have announced (or are shipping) DVD -/+ RW drives, which do 
it all.
