Thanks for the replies. (BTW, I think the 4" dropsy was operator error -
sorry).

Assuming my hard drive is failing, what about the feasibility of replacing
it, having regard to cost and whether other components could fail soon
after? Guess I need to get more RAM too. I've also been thinking about
getting a CD burner to back-up. Could I get my CD player replaced by a CD-RW
or would an external one be better/cheaper? I do have a 2 port USB card
installed.

The alternative is to save up for, say an eMac, but I hate the thought of
throwing out the 8500 if it can be refurbished and/or upgraded economically.

<Your email looked like it had dropsy as it started 4" down below the
subject line.
<Smacks of corrupt finder prefs. and/or Finder file?

<How much memory do you have?
<Kill virtual memory if you can, I believe it trashes your hard drive
constantly with no benefits if you have enough ram.

<Also your hard drive may be going south...

<Could be a dying hard drive. Back up any important data.

spinning ball for a few seconds when moving around folders etc. CDs take
quite a while to appear on the desktop. The hard disk sounds like it's
working much harder than previously ...
