She's right.  Our first computer, an SE (c1987) with a 20MB HD, is
functioning to this day; the monitor eventually went out, but not the drive.
Another SE of the same vintage was working perfectly when I donated it two
months ago, ditto a somewhat newer Classic II with a slightly larger HD.
But although Mike's estimate of drive life seems to me overly pessimistic,
the advice to "back up as often as possible, unless you don't care" should
come as standard equipment with every new (or old) computer -- not that
anyone would pay attention.  At least not till they had to fork out
thousands (!) of dollars to recover a year's (a *year's*!!) lost work.
