The scroll lock key does indeed have a function, at least on Intel machines. In spreadsheet programs, the scroll lock key will "lock the scrolling" on the screen. So if your selected cell is in the middle of the screen, and you turn on scroll lock, the entire table will move around, and your selection rectangle will stay in the center where you left it, instead of moving the selection rectangle and scrolling at the edges of the screen. It is very useful for spreadsheet users because you can view cells without scrolling all the way to them. Excel for Office XP uses it, and I suspect it works similarly in Excel X for Mac. Also, my cool answering machine program flashes the scroll lock light to tell me I have messages :)
