Can you cut the tang off one of the upper drive sleds and have it work

Sure, but it won't latch.

There are two types of 3.5" drive sleds.

The bottom left sled (and position) has a forward-facing, 1-1/8" wide latch,
while the upper left sled (and position) has a backward-facing, 1-5/8" wide
latch.

For Zips drives, the forward-facing, 1-1/8" wide latch sled is used, but the
drive itself is raised up about 0.6", so as to represent a 1.6" drive, by a
sheet metal adapter. The actual height above the sled is 38mm, which is about
1.5".

Factoid 1: the sled used by the standard hard drive in the G3 DT has a 1-1/8"
latch (and is left-facing), but is otherwise identical to the forward-facing,
1-1/8" wide latch.

Factoid 2: the G3 DT will indeed accommodate a 1.6" hard drive in the
standard hard drive position (the "basement"), but there is very little room
for proper circulation of cooling air for that drive.

Peter.
