Hi,

I've been on the mailing list for a couple of weeks, just seeing
if my questions will be brought up before I used up the list's time
uselessly.

I have just been given a Mac 8500/132, 80MB RAM, 2G Hard Drive with
some extra bits. They are the Kensington trackball, an extra ethernet card,
and
an ATI Xclaim GA video card. I would like to get the machine on OS X/10.2.X.
Machine
has 80MB of Ram and is running OS 9.0. I would like to ask the following
questions:

1. Ram will be upgraded to 256MB at least. Do I need or want to take it to
512MB? Is there a significant speed difference in going to 512MB under
OS X?

2. I will need an upgrade CPU. For general computing (Internet Access,
Word processing, maybe a little game playing) do I need to get a G4 or
will a G3 do? I was thinking about getting something like a G3/450/1MB,
or a G4/400/1MB. I know from reading here that I will need either the
vendor specific enabler, or the free one to be able to use OS X.

3. Will the ATI video card do, or do I need to factor in a new video card
as well? Does ATI have OS X drivers for this card, or are they built into
OSx, or just don't bother and jump directly into a new video card? If
so, stick with ATI, or go to a GeForce based card?

4. As there are only 3 PCI slots on this machine, do I need to keep the
Ethernet
card? Is there anything performance limiting with the on-board ethernet
port?

5. Should I be thinking of getting an ATA card, and going to an ATA hard
drive
set up vs. the current SCSI setup?

Sorry for the barrage of questions, but I've been away from Macs for
a while (last Mac machine was a Mac IIvx).
