Let's not forget about drag and dropping.  If you drag-n-drop a picture/pattern
file into the Appearance's desktop sample (where you see what pattern/picture
is presently) it will place it.  However when I was running 8.5 in a PowerMac
4400/200 I had, the desktop pictures would not work most of the times.  only a
few simpletext screenshots would work, everything else wouldn't work (showed a
pink desktop in the sample and would not place anything on screen), PhotoShop
saved JPEGs, GIFs even PICT files!  dunno why (I know it was not normal)
however I had other things to do, so I didn't put a second thought on it.
Upgrading to 9.1 solved the problem.  I sold the PM 4400/200 not too long ago.
