Hi,
in case you don't know there is an extension called 5500/6500 ATA Update
that might be of help to you. (there is also another one for Video Input Update).
You can find them on the Apple ftp site or on :

Another thing to do would be to update the HD driver with Drive Set Up
(1.7.3). No reformatting required.
Otherwise, going for a 7200 rpm drive with 2 MB of cache (or 8 MB, but
those are a bit more expensive) would be your best bet. However, a 5400
rpm drive with 2 MB of cache will perform only about 10% less than a
7200 rpm.
