Get a beige G3, they are dirt cheap now.  I don't know what the 
situation is like in the US, as I haven't been tracking your prices, 
but in Australia they are trading around $100 of your American 
dollars.

66mHz bus, G3 onboard, upgradeable to a 533mHz G4 with a simple card 
swap.  Decent video acceleration, IDE built in, cheap 
industry-standard RAM,  OS X native.  4-6 gigs of drive space, a 
reasonably fast CD drive, and some with Zip drives.  You can't lose.

Starting with a 73/5/600, by the time you've added a G3 card, the 
fancy-pants RAM those older machines use, and either a large SCSI 
hard drive or an ATA card and HD,  you'll end up paying way more.

USB and Firewire will cost the same either way, and not much at that.
