The mouse on my Starmax just died. I found several on ebay with $2
starting price, but one bid put me out -- I'd set a $5 max. Local
recycled computer shop had used ones at $20. That was enough to push
me ahead.

Simple continuity check showed the cable was bad. Isolated to the
obvious spot -- the sinuous "strain relief" where the cable passes
through the case. Cut that part out, restored the connections, and
all is well.

Note: the screw holding the case together was under the foil label.

My cable was color coded -- red, yellow, white, and shield. If yours
isn't, take care to get the splices right. (BTW: I did splice, not
rewire to the connector, because I couldn't figure how to undo and
redo the connector-cable connections.)
