I took the 2gb stock Apple-branded Quantum drive out of my 5500/250 and
replaced it with a 10gb 7200rpm Quantum that I had used before on a PC.
When I started up from the Mac OS 8.5 cd it asked if I wanted to
initialize the disk and I said yes. Then when I opened up Drive Setup it
said something about a disk driver but that it could still initialize
the drive, I chose to do a low level format.

It's been over 1.5 hours and it's still doing that. Should I reboot the
computer and do a normal format? Or will it then force me to do a low
level? And this is the only way to get a drive with the proper drivers
to work with a mac? Also what exactly are these "drivers" is it sort of
like the boot sector on a windows pc?
