Well, the 4400s are darn snappy boxes. They have their share of oddities, 
but they're right snappy. I have (or had, I seem to have killed it :/  ) a 
Starmax 4000 and it was quite usable.

The 6300s, on the other hand, are a bit iffy. They're still PPCs and still 
run decently enough though, and they sure beat no computer at all.

More or less any external modem should work. Might need an adapter but they 
should all work. There were some Comm Slot/Comm Slot II modems, but they 
max out at 28.8 or 33.6 usually. AFAIK none of the PCI modems work in Mac.
