This doesn't specifically answer your question, but you can also option-click-and-hold and a little menu of options will come up. If you use "Download Link to Disk" it will ask you which folder you want to download the file into. I find this a useful feature. I also find that IE is slow and unreliable for downloads. I much prefer to keep something like Interarchy or Anarchy running and when I find a link to a downloadable file, I choose "Get via http" in Anarchy and paste in the link.
