The PSU connectors are completely different. The IIcx, IIci, IIvi, IIvx,
Q700, C650, Q650 and 7100 have PSU connectors half the size of the 800 and
840. Also the 7100 type have the connector mounted on floating bushes just
outside the case, while the 800/840's are recessed and attached to the MB by
a short lead. 

Most PSU's of the 800/840 type I see are usually OK if they start the Mac,
with the exception of when their internal main reservoir capacitors lose
value. They then start the Mac, and as drives spin up can't supply the
current and switch off.
