I'm still curious what that "Printer Utility" on my OS 9 CD (1.4MB) is about;
is it used in lieu of the above extensions; and so, unnecessary in my case?

This utility is necessary to download fonts to the printer, manage the
printer's hard disk (if attached), display the page count, set/reset the
startup page, print the printer's configuration settings (most of which are
internal "soft switches"), etcetera.

Where should I place the folder of PPD files?

System Folders --> Externsions --> Printer Descriptions

All PPD files are stored there, by default, and LaserWriter 8 looks for them
there.

If you have PPD files for non-Apple printers, such as for a Linotype-Hell
Linotronic 200 or 300 imagesetter, these would go there, too.

Any ideas on how to minimize the noxious smell of nicotine permeating this LW
II?

I completely disassemble affected printers, manually wash all plastic covers
with Simple Green or an equivalent solution, and then clean/rinse/disinfect
these covers in my dishwasher. Reassemble in reverse order.

Don't forget the ozone filter, but I wouldn't treat this filter very
aggressively. It is quite fragile.

I've been wiping is with isopropyl alcohol and the towels are coming up
yellow but I need a better "solution".

See above.

The mother of my friend Barb who gave the printer to me, died of
tobacco-related lung cancer and yet Barb smoked around her kids and still
smokes 30 a day. I thought I was a slow learner!

Sorry to hear that.

Thanks Peter!

You're most welcome, Terry.

Peter.
