ATA/IDE support isn't flakey so much as the chipset on rev.1s was never 
meant to support slaves, if you only have one drive on each chain there 
are no problems at all. The video sucks for acceleration but I know 
places Rage128 16MB card go for as low as $40 so as you say no worries 
on the video.
