Yes it's "illegal" to make even a backup copy of a dvd (per the DMCA)
because when you buy a dvd it comes with a copy protected 
"CSS" (thus "DeCSS" to decrypt dvd's) but not to make dvd's with your
home videos and such and distribute them and copy them 1,000,000x if you
want to!

But I say @*&% you DMCA!! SHOVE IT WHERE THE SON DON'T SHINE. Making a
copy of something you own for a backup is considered "fair use" by every
copyright law before the DMCA.
