Thanks to everyone who posted answers to my questions - sounds like my Fujitsu SCSI drive ought to be bootable. I'll investigate different drivers etc, but in a few months' time - my Mac is a work machine that functions very well otherwise, and I don't want to fix something that ain't really broke!
