No, just lower cost, Apple first started to use IDE drives as a cost
cutting exercise in the 'cheaper' Mac's and stuck with the higher
performance SCSI drives in the 'serious' machines (early IDE was
unsuitable for video streaming etc as it was too slow and processor
intensive).
However when IDE performance improved to a comparable level with SCSI
Apple took the decision to drop the pricier SCSI as it offered few (if
any) advantages and went fully over to IDE.
Ben.
NB I still consider it a backward step and use SCSI in all my Mac's
(all pre IDE machines) and both my PC's and my Sparc station.
