At 16:06 -0800, 12/6/02, (Robert P. McAllister) observed:
It all depends on what machine you're upgrading. There's a lot out there. Most of what you can upgrade a new computer with you can add to the older PCI Macs
(snip)
And, At 16:52 -0700, 12/6/02, (Bruce Johnson) observed:
You can get: Video upgrades: ATI makes the Radeon 7000, you can hack old VooDoo cards, and there are a variety of older video cards made for them.
(snip)
USB 1.1 cards: Any OHCI-compliant USB card will work on a Mac.
(snip)
Firewire card: there are a bunch of PCI firewire adapters on the market,
(snip)
There are video capture cards you can put in there; I just set up an old 7300 last week here interfacing a camera and a gel reader.
Thank all of you (there were others), however, one of the things I "wanted," was to know what all the above _are_ and what they are _good_ for.
I think (after perusing the previously-cited sites) I understand what a ZIF carrier and card is, and how they allow for a variety of G3 and G4 upgrades.
To answer Robert McAllister's cogent query, I have an 8500. and it has three PCI and one DAV slot(s)..
Since the G3-G4 upgrades go into the microprocessor slot (AITIU), then what three things can go into the PCI slots, USB/ATI/Firewire?
Is the DAV slot for a video (as in television) card, then?
With my appreciation,
I remain,
