I've gone into vapor lock! I haven't used a serial printer connection in so long that I've forgotten all the details.
How do I connect a Laserwriter IIg to my 8600 via printer/serial cable, plus run File Sharing and my network-shared broadboand Internet connection via my built-in Ethernet port? The whole Appletalk concept is messing with me, and I can't figure out how to make it all work. Right now, I've got the Laserwriter IIg connected to the Mac's printer port, I've got Appletalk running over "Ethernet built-in", and I've got TCP/IP running over "Ethernet built-in". Internet works, file sharing works, but in the Chooser, when I click on LaserWriter 8, there is no printer there. And, yes, the printer is on. If I put Appletalk to "Printer Port", the printer shows up. Also, strange, is that when I look at the Apple website, they show a "Laserwriter" driver and a "Laserwriter 8" driver. When I try to download the "Laserwriter" driver, it get this file called "Laser Prep", but it's not an extension, and I can't figure out where it goes or what it does. Do I need this solve my problem? WHAT's THE DEAL? I feel like this is such a basic question after using Macs for 15 years, but I'm open to input. Thanks in advance. Oh, and just as a side issue, why, under File Sharing, is the "Enable File Sharing clients to connect over TCP" box grayed out so I can't select it? I'm running 9.2 on an 8600/G4. I thought I could fix all this by File Sharing over TCP/IP (instead of Appleshare) on the home network, but I can't click the box! -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
