Thanks Tim, I tried three different utilities, disabled WS and changed the ID to 5. The drive spun up immediately (so WS was working) but ka-chuk'd 4 times while screaming up and with my ear close (case off) had too cyclical or oscillating a whine. Compared to the almost cool temp of my Seagate 2 GB this one was getting hot. Anyway, I smelled a rat moreso re. the type of guys who get you to haul their garbage away cause they know it's a hassle to get rid of it themselves. With just enough little white lies to inspire you to naiively think it's still a good component. Next time someone tries to give me an old drive I'll check if they have empty drive bays on their working computers. If they do, then what's this one doing lying around? :) Oh well. . . learned what I needed to know for the 8600 that's on the way with 2, 4.5 drives I know are working.
