There was a circuit board in the 1710 (deflection board?) that was infamous.
You either had a good one that lasted forever or you had the standard unit
that died. The board is still available, (I believe there are numerous FAQs
at apple.com/support that describe the symptoms, problem and cure.) but can
cost more than the monitor is worth.   There were some software issues, that
are also described in the FAQs, but I don't remember if that was for actual
monitor operation or to allow control of some of the monitor functions
remotely.
