On the x100 series, the whatever is at the other end of your ethernet 
cable needs to be active when you power up the machine.  So, if 
you're using a hub, no problem, just leave the hub on all the time. 
If you're using a cross over cable to another machine, that other 
machine needs to be turned on first.  Of course, you may have some 
other problem, but what I've described has bitten a lot of people in 
the past.
