We have Cox in Vegas as well. I have no problems with them, (now) but I wouldn't let them touch anything after the cable guy couldn't get the modem to work. "it's a problem in your computers!" was his statement. (sound familiar?) I'd have been at their mercy except I run a computer consulting company and build networks as a part of my service.
I asked him if he had a crossover ethernet cable to tie the modem to my hub. (I have a bunch of Macs on my network tied into a pair of networked hubs, one of which has the modem attached.) He insisted that a crossover cable would not work on my configuration. When he went outside to recheck the cable box, I connected a crossover cable from one of my parts drawers and had everything running when he came back in. A single Mac connects to the modem via an ethernet patch cable, but a hub (or router) reverses the signal and thus uses a crossover cable. You might look at the cable that they are trying to use. You can see the colors of the wires. (Usually by the connectors.) If the wires are in exactly the same order in relation to the plugs at both ends, it is a patch cable. if the colors are reversed, it is a crossover cable. Not knowing the difference (or that there is a difference) is a common mistake among cable "techs".
