Michael, What OS are you running? I believe earlier versions of Apple Disk Setup won't initialize non-Apple ROMmed drives without a hack. With Apple Drive Setup 1.7.3 I had no trouble initializing a Maxtor 30GB IDE in my 9600. You can download it from Apple's site. When you're able to initialize the drive it might be a good idea to write zeroes to it just to make sure there's no baggage from the previous owner lurking beneath the surface.
