Well, it should open "automatically" on a Mac also, unless it was somehow 
discombobulated and lost its type/creator code. If the Icon for the file 
shows up in the finder then you might check the File Exchange control 
panel to see if the .pdf has been improperly mapped. If so, just switch 
it back.

If the file "lives" in a subordinate folder, you can just drag it to the 
desktop (or make an alias and put that on the desktop) where it can be 
opened with a "double click."
