joe you said: Your machine has 1MB of VRAM internal according to <http://lowendmac.com/ppc/6360.shtml> which can display thousands of colors at 800x600 resolution, or 256 colors at 1024x768 resolution. What size monitor do you use, at what settings? >>i have a choice of monitors i can use with this. i can use the onboard VRAM and I can employ one of my several apple monitors: a multiscan 14, 15, rgb, or 2 other early color monitors...or i can use an adapter and use one of a number of vga monitors i have, 17 inch , and one sony trinitron 19 inch. so I can put in a video card for higher res;s: i dont understand at this point how much RAM a videocard needs on it to drive my bigger VGA monitors at higher resolutions and max number of colors. thats where I got confused and what i thought i knew suddenly lost clarity. i keep seeing reviews for putting the ATI rage 128 in this machine. that seems to be the only clear constant I can discern. and yet i saw a 32 MB radeon card on eBay, and i mailed the seller and asked if it was too much card to put in my 6360 and he said it wouldbe a great card for it. and he has 25 macs in his house. so i figured he must know what the's saying. and i keep reminding myself that if I do get a big card, the way my luck goes, I probably will come into one of those killer machines in the 7500 to 9500 range, that i know can be decked out like crazy, and i can move the card over into that, too. so it wont be wasted money up the road. but i am still unclear on how much card--ie, how much RAM on it, any other features on it, is way too much for this machine. i do want 3d rendering, gaming quality visuals if possible. this is my 'highest' mac in my collection so far. its not the money I'm asking about. it's the match up with my machine, monitor and the card and understanding what it can handle. and yes, i have my machine's stats memorized by now. >Can it handle higher resolutions and >color depths than what is stated above? >This is what you need to consider before >you dump tons of money into video >acceleration. =20 >My 17 inch runs at millions of colors at >1024x768, 85Hz on an 8MB iXmicro >video card. >My second monitor is a 13 inch running >at millions of colors at 640x480, 67 Hz >on 4MB internal VRAM. all this in duscussion re: "I am becoming confused about how much is too much for my 6360. all these are eBay offers right now for PCI video acceleration cards, and I guess I don't understand as much as i thought i did, about what cards can go in my 6360 and stay comfortably within its limits. for those who don't know the specs of that machine, its stock is 40 mhz bus, 160mz 603e chip, max 136MB RAM, onboard RAM 8MB, cache 256k, but a processor upgradeable to 320 MHz G3 with L2 cache card and up to 1MB L2 cache. has one PCI slot.
