I have a Seagate ST118273W/Barracuda 18 (7.2K) 18GB drive in an APS
Pro external case attached to an Adaptec 2940UW card in a PCPro 210
w/PowerLogix G3/400 w/320 MB of RAM running OS 8.6, with a Belkin USB
1.1 card for a Logitech optical mouse..

 From time to time this drive will seemingly go to sleep with a hard
'clank' and then wake up when another drive is accessed - sometimes
w/o problem - but sometimes will 'freeze' open applications so that,
although cursor will respond to mouse movement commands, restart is
required as no applications can be accessed.

Otherwise works OK; Norton, Diskwarrior and TechTool find no problems.

When the drive is turned off - it's the first external drive on the
SCSI UW chain, the next being an IBM 4.5GB 'W' drive in an APS Pro
case, which is where the chain is terminated - there are no problems;
and never any problems with the IBM drive.

And the problem is the same with G3/400 or with original 604e/210.

I am running Sleeper, and have set this drive set to NOT sleep, so
I'm mystified as to what's happening, and why.

Help appreciated.
