I've had this same problem happen with a Maxtor 60GB IDE drive in my
7300, which would happen about twice a week. It (so far :-) was repaired by
replacing the power cable from the power supply to the hard disk -- it seems
that the cable was loose and periodic vibration would interrupt the drive's
power and cause it to cycle on and off. When this happened, the drive would
click, whirr, come back on, but after a pause the pointer would lock up and
the whole system would freeze.

Replacing the power cable seems to have fixed this (for the last three weeks
anyway, so I will call my theory sound ;-). I wonder if your HD is having
similar power problems.
