I'm totally guessing here, but any chance you're using
one of the older versions of Virex? They had some
problems with, as I recall, specifically: file
copying and networks and stuff, a few years ago.

What caught my eye, that reminded me of the Virex
thing, is when you said: "As soon as I tried to copy
my Eudora system folder across BOTH Macs crashed." And
you said the two Macs were set up to exchange files
somehow.

Both of those fit that Virex pattern of misbehavior.

The Virex/network/file-copy problem was supposedly
solved with a subsequent release, but even the (at
that time) new version did *not* solve the problems I
was having with Virex, copying files from one drive to
another (freezing/crashing) - and after trying the
*next* newest version of Virex as well with the same
results, I eventually disabled Virex altogether, and
the problems *immediately* went away. This was
repeatable and consistent, not random. (I switched to
one of their competitors, and have had no more
problems... yeah I know what they say about Mac virus
stuff... but this was back, like, in the "Autostart"/
whatever days, or few year(s) thereafter, I forget
exactly now... )

(By the way, despite all of that, the old Virex *app*
is still useful to keep around, for its snapshot
feature which can be run *manually* to help keep track
of what nifty new files and stuff get installed by
various apps and installers - just run a before and
after "compare". At least that way, you get some use
out of an already-paid-for program, so it's
not a total waste of money after all)

Anyway, that may not be what's going on in your case,
but thought I'd mention it... just in case. I'd hate
to see someone struggling with old Virex and to think
I knew a possible solution but didn't mention it...
*so* am writing this, even though I don't know if you
have Virex or not. But the symptoms sure sound
familiar. Probably a lot of things could cause that, tho'.

Good luck... (hope this hasn't already been answered -
I'm getting caught up with my Digests in my typical
rather slow fashion, and may have missed some replies
or something).
