Please check your preference settings.  GC 4.4.4 PPC is creating 
custom icons as expected, for me.

If the original was very small, yes - the total file size will double 
and then some.  That's because of the size of the custom icons.

It sounds like you aren't recompressing the image when you save it? 
Or you're saving a JPEG image in an uncompressed format such as TIFF?
