BeOS will run well on your system. It will be fast and stable. The starter
extension for BeOS only works up through OS 8.6. In theory everything should
cross compile and a PPC applications should be created as easily as an X86
application. In practice it seems that very few developers bother with PPC
applications. I think the last full release version (R5?) contains all the
BeOS development tools. That should provide you with a compiler.

I found an many things to like with BeOS. As with many new designs of most
anything there are ideas implemented that are very intriguing and several
downright well done. In the end for me, it was just never fleshed out enough
to be as useful as the Mac OS.
