Hi,
The HD can be terminated with onboard jumpers if it has 'active
termination' or 'termination enable' as an option in the manuf specs -
not all scsi drives have this option. If the HD has not got 'active
termination' or 'enable' the termination can be supplied by a terminated
HD adapter or - I believe but check it out - a terminator placed less
than four inches after the last device on the cable. The last device on
the chain must be terminated to prevent data loss leading to crashes and
freezing.
'Term Power' is not active termination - I don't quite know what it
is but I know it's not the option to terminate the chain.
In my 8500 the cd is the first on the int scsi with id 3 - next bay
down is the floppy on it's own connection to the mobo - next down is an
unterminated 4.5 gig 80 pin Barracuda with a 80/68/50 adapter at scs1 id
0 - and the bottom bay holds a 4.5 gig 80 pin Barracuda with a 80/50
adpter which has the termination option via jumpers on the adapter as the
drive has no termination option.
Getting the drives in the 8500 and connected was extremely
frustrating due to the poor internal design.
My Umax Pulsar has a cdrw in 5.25 bay 1 (id 4),cd in 5.25 bay 2 (id
3), 9gig 68 pin IBM 9LP in 3.5 bay 3 (id 0), 2gig 68 pin Barracuda in 3.5
bay 4 (id 1), the floppy bay (5) below is used for testing and formatting
scsi drives as a 3.5 HD is a snug temp fit with no screws and an IBM 4.5
gig in 3.5 bay 6 (id 6) terminated via a jumper on the drive. Bay 7 I
have yet to find screws for.
I have tried most of the software related to HD's but have yet to
find anything which will confirm termination or check the 'health' of the
chain. The drive jumpers should be approched with care too as I have
melted HD circuits by choosing the wrong jumper....very smelly.
All manufs supply jumper setting diagrams for their drives - I took
a 1gig terminated IBM from a 7500 yesterday and got the specs from
IBM/Hitachi to disable the termination and set the scsi to id 2 before
slotting it into test bay 5 for zeroing and fresh installation of OS
7.5.3 (free from Apple) for a friend who still uses a 11VX but only has
an 80MB HD. Now he has a spacious 1 gig.
