You sure it isn't the software updater trying to check for updates?

<< This is more of a OS 9.x problem, but it is occurring on my 8500, so I hope
I can get some help. I have a problem with my computer trying to "phone
home", i.e. trying to dial up by itself. It will do this with no other
programs running. I shut down once while this was starting and I briefly saw
the AppleScript icon in the menu switcher. I suspect it may be a game trying
to detect a network, but I haven't been able to pin it down. Any suggestions
as to how I can disable this (can't really disable AppleScript, this would
screw up a lot of other programs) or at least find out what program is doing
this? I've checked the modem logs, but it doesn't give information as to
what program is trying to dial in. When this occurs during a CD burn, it's
insta-coaster.
