     If it initialises it should be ok - have you tried testing it with 
HD Setup - also try the full wipe with the initialisation options of low 
level format and zero all data - this should bring to light any bad 
sectors.
     Are you installing from a boot cd? Sometimes an install from a non 
boot cd will be corrupted by background processes whereas a boot cd loads 
only the minimal extension set for installation - you can get around this 
by creating a new set in the extension manager which loads only the cd 
reader - reboot the HD - insert the cd and install.
