Thanks to all who offered advice.  I got my 7600/G3 to recognize the HD 
again, but now I cannot initialize the drive. HD Toolkit and ATTO 
ExpressPro Tools both failed, as well as Drive Setup and a hacked copy 
of Drive Setup.  In the case of the latter two programs, I get a message 
saying that the drive lacks 512-byte sectors and therefore cannot be 
initialized.
The drive is one of those IBM full height jobs (DCHS-09F), and there 
have been mixed reports of success on the xlr8yourmac database.
Does that mean that the drive  is basically unusable in my mac?
