In some situations the Mac checks out what volumes are mounted (HDs, CDs, diskettes,...). As I remeber, it happens f.ex. whenever you get an Open dialog box. With slow devices (like older CD-ROMs) this can be anoying. Solution: take out the CD when not accessing it - or get a new, fast CD-ROM...
