It's probably hitting the hard drive to load a code fragment -- & when it 
does, the whole SCSI chain gets checked. You're running virtual memory, 
right?

It would be faster if you had no CD drive -- or (less drastically), if you 
turned off VM (if you can afford to). And/or beef up the Disk Cache
(again, if you can afford to.)
