Ya, sounds like you have corruption probs. I would be very suspect of the files that were originally on that partition 3. Check them before you go putting them on other hard disks. (Sorry to be late with that advice)
BTW, thanks for the heads up on the SCSI protoccols. I didn't know that you should never turn off a SCSI device with the rest of the system on! Have been doing that for years with my scanner and never had a fried mobo. I did however fry my powerbook by not noticing it was sleeping when I plugged a zip disk into it.
