I have a bit of a networking question. I have 3 macs on a LAN, one running 9.2 and the other two running 8.6. I've been using AppleTalk, mostly because it is so damn easy, but now I'm am considering switching to TCP/IP, but I am a little unsure about a few things:
1. One of these machine I use to dial into the internet with, so TCP/IP is already configured for that. Of course because it is dial-up the address is dynamic. Would adding another configuration with a manually supplied address screw this up? Would I have to switch back and forth between configurations when I wanted to access the network or the internet? 2. If I do manage to set all this up, would it be best to turn AppleTalk off, or would the computer just use the fastest protocol available? Would there be any conflicts between the protocols? Although AppleTalk has been working fine for me and the network doesn't get used all the time , the main reason I'm considering the switch is that one of the machines is a rendering slave for some 3D apps, so I'm occasionally transferring some rather large files back and forth. Is there that much of a speed gain so that the switch would even be worth it? Any URLs of useful sites would be appreciated (Google has tended to turn up a lot of .edu sites specific to dialing into their network.)
