Here's a fun one I posted on MacObserver.com a while ago:

Don't you hate it when you buy a great computer, only to have 2 years pass and
suddenly you can't play the hottest new games on it?

Boy, I sure do. I have a Powermac 7300/200. This uses a 604e chip, I have 1mb
cache and 600mb physical RAM. I have added a 9 gb hard drive, and ATI's XCLAIM
VR 128 PCI video card. One of the things I have found is that some of the
software that claims not to work on my system does work on my system. I decided
to create a topic dedicated to the enterprising (and firmly in denial) users
who try software on out-of-date machines.

NOTE: Trying software on hardware that does not meet the minimum hardware
requirements can CRASH your system. Make sure you backup your data before
trying these or any other programs. I am in no way responsible for lost data
(or worse) as a result of your experimentation.

Diablo II: This was the first one I tried. The requirements are a G3 or better
for mac, but on a PC, you only need a Pentium of any flavor running at 233 mhz!
I found that the game runs a little choppy at the beginning, but is quite
playable on my machine! (I have beaten Diablo twice and have a 87th level
Barbarian.) As an interesting footnote, I had the opportunity to play Diablo II
on a Pentium III, and I had a hard time noticing the difference in game play.

Diablo II: Lord of Destruction: This gets a little more choppy when I get into
the expansion levels, but the rest of the game runs just fine (see above).
Still, this is more than acceptable to play the game, get the cool expansion
features, and I don't have to buy a new computer!

American McGee's Alice, DEMO: I got this to install and run just fine, but it
was very slow and choppy. It was nice to learn that I wasn't that interested in
the game, and I could go back to playing Tomb Raider.

Tony Hawk, Pro Skater DEMO: Runs just fine on my machine.

Star Wars Episode I; Pod Racer: Installed OK, but crashed on startup.

Photoshop 6 WOW! Styles Demo: Got this off of the new MacAddict disc. Although
Styles are new to Photoshop 6, you can use the styles in Photoshop 5.5 by
clicking "Layer," then "Effects," then "Copy Effects." Then go to the image you
want to apply the effect to and navigate to "Paste Effects." Works just fine.

Oni DEMO: Installed just fine, plays the first movie, then crashes.

These are all the titles I have played with, anyone else have any cool stories?
Please post your system configuration and what you tried, and the results of
your experiment.

The only type of rule of thumb I have found so far is if your OS requirements
are met, and the only thing lacking is the CPU, chances seem to be pretty good.
If you have a software installer that queries the hardware profile, you may
have to install it on a newer machine and then copy all of the files over to
the older one.
