It was very real, and if the server you wanted got hit, it was 
un-available.   Also servers in the same hosting area were generally 
very slow to respond, until the infected machine was shut down.   The 
really sad thing is, this virus attacked a know vulnerability in 
M$-SQL server that I know the patch was available for over a year ago.
